Mishkat

the niche that shelters a lamp · 2026–27

Mishkat is the name of this year's executive committee within MSA HKU, and the idea we're building the whole session around.

مشكاة

What is Mishkat?

Mishkat is the Arabic word for a lamp-niche — the small recess built into a wall to help a single flame shine further into the room. It's the name of this year's executive committee within MSA HKU, and the idea we're building the 2026–27 session around: give people a place to stand, and their own light travels further.

The Qur'an uses this same image to describe divine light — a lamp inside a niche, inside glass, glowing "as though it were a radiant star" (Surah An-Nur, 24:35).

This year's ExCo sees that as an amanah — a trust: to nurture this community so every voice is heard, and every student has room to thrive.

Light within light

In the Qur'an's Verse of Light, a single flame is set inside glass, and the glass inside a niche cut into a wall — each layer drawing the flame closer, until it glows like a brilliant star.

Nothing in that image competes with the fire. Every layer of stone and glass exists only to shelter it, and let it reach further than it could alone.

Mishkat asks the same of us this year — to hold space for one another's light, so it can be seen a little more clearly, and carried a little further.

What the niche holds

Four ideas steady this session's flame, the way stone steadies a lamp against the wind.

Shelter

Belonging comes first. We keep rooms — physical and otherwise — where every student is welcome exactly as they arrive.

Amplify

Leadership here isn't the flame itself. It's the willingness to cup a hand around someone else's light until it steadies.

Illuminate

Halaqas, talks, and quiet study — so understanding is given room to grow without ever needing to be loud.

Gather

A niche only matters in relation to a wall, a courtyard, a mosque. Community turns one lamp into a shared glow.

Where the light gathers

A few of the rooms we'll be holding open this session.

Weekly

Jummah & Halaqah

Prayer and reflection, held gently, every week of term.

Termly

Iftar Nights

Long tables, shared food, and the quiet of a fast breaking together.

September

Welcome Week

A first, unhurried introduction to the community for new students.

Ongoing

Sister & Brother Circles

Smaller spaces for the conversations that need more room to breathe.
